JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Lifeguard Supervisor

Department: Parks

Reports To: Parks Superintendent

This position is seasonal and for the summer 2018 swim season.

SUMMARY

Responsible for recruiting, supervising, and training the lifeguard team; conducting facility safety checks; and communicating staff and equipment needs to facility management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least sixteen years old

  • Current certification in the following:

  • Lifeguard management, Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid

  • Preemployment testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current certification in the following:

  • American Red Cross Shallow Water Attendance and First Aid (up to 4-feet)

  • American Red Cross Waterpark Lifeguarding and First Aid for waterpark and multi-attraction facility positions

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor

  • Pool Operator (local, state, or nationally recognized agency or organization)

  • Several years or season of lifeguarding experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge and application of life-guarding surveillance and rescue techniques

  • The ability to instruct, assign, supervise, and elevate lifeguards in the performance of their duties

  • An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, polices, and procedures

  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures

  • Leadership and public relations skills

  • Problem solving and decision-making skills

  • The ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations

  • The ability to identify hazards and unsafe practices and to make suitable recommendations for minimizing or eliminating those hazards

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the facility to ensure safety of patrons and lifeguard team

  • Supervise, train, build, and maintain a well-trained lifeguard team that follows established facility policies and procedures

  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies

  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services

  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations in a consistent manner

  • Handle problem situations with uncooperative patrons

  • Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the parks superintendent

  • Perform and supervise various maintenance duties to maintain a clean and safe facility

  • Supervise the daily facility safety inspection

  • identify hazards and unsafe practices and to make suitable recommendations for minimizing or eliminating those hazards

  • Responsible for monitoring, testing, and maintaining appropriate pool and splash park chemical balance

  • Maintain records, complete timecards and other reports

  • Coordinate lifeguard schedules; schedule swim lessons, parties, senior swim, and other special events

  • Solve problems and delegate responsibilities

  • Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength, and endurance)

  • Present professional appearance and attitudes at all times

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the parks superintendent
